Touchdown

“INFORMATION. THE PROGRESS HAS ARRIVED AT DESTINATION. MAIN VISUAL IS AVAILABLE.”

“Put it on the main screen,” instructed Commander Shore. Within milliseconds the optical panel was filled with the image of the planet, it was an odd looking world to say the least. It appeared to be more or less one continent which took up less then a quarter of the entire surface with a few minor land masses sparsely distributed over the rest of the surface. The main continent showed signs of multiple rivers giving the landmass the appearance of skin riddled with psoriasis.

“Interesting land formation,” mused Jenna. “It makes me think of the Earth before the great continental drift.”

Tanal hadn’t much knowledge of Modern Earth History let alone the geological history so he just nodded in silent agreement, it was one of the down sides of growing up on one of the terraformed meteorites in the home solar system. “Frank is there any known data on this planet at all?” He asked trying to make himself look useful. Frank’s databases buzzed into action for a few seconds as the question was processed.

“INFORMATION AVAILABLE IS LIMITED. THE PLANETOID WAS DETECTED BY THE FIRST EXPANSION AND LATER LOGGED BY A FREELANCE SHIP 40 YEARS AGO. INFORMATION AVAILABLE SUGGESTS THE PI-NERS NAMED THE PLANET PANGAEA. THIS NAME WAS NOT OFFICIALLY REGISTERED.”

Jenna laughed, “of course they called it Pangaea,  the name given to the fabled single continent on Earth. These guys weren’t very imaginative.”

“Frank run a scan and give us an analysis of the planet,” said Commander Shore.

“CONFIRMED.” A distant hum filled the air and the viewing screen glowed through with a hue of varying colours as the various scans completed

“What do you reckon Jenna?” Asked Tanal.

“There must be a reason the council asked us to examine the world, perhaps they’re planning to start an outpost in this sector,”she mused.

“SCAN COMPLETED. ATMOSPHERE 85% NITROGEN 14% OXYGEN 0.04% CARBON DIOXIDE. GRAVITY 2% BELOW EARTH NORMAL. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF OCEAN SUGGESTS FRESH WATER. LOW LEVEL ENERGY IMPULSES FROM PLANET SURFACE…”

“Ok that’ll do for now Frank,” interrupted Shore. He swtiched on a communication speaker “Xara can you report to the bridge, we need you to head a landing party.”

“I’ll be there in five,” answered Xara.

“Fresh water planet,” mused Jenna. “Sounds like we will be moving into new territory
