One of my favourite alto saxophone players was Julian “Cannonball” Adderlay, who was a played the alto with a robust soulful tone. Over his recording career he recorded with some of the giants of the modern Jazz scene including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey and Joseph Zawinul.
One his most famous albums was a fake live album called “Mercy Mercy Mercy” which was recorded in the studio with an audience invited in with promise of free drink. The title track of the album was composed by Joe Zawinul and rapidly became a Jazz standard and is an interesting mix of Soul Jazz and Gospel rhythms.
Well here is an actual live performance of the track from a Paris concert in 1969.
