A Tune A Day #16

Some more classic British TV related music here. This is a cover of “Whispering Grass” by Don Estelle and Windsor Davies, who were part of the ensemble cast that made the sitcom “It Ain’t ‘Alf Hot Mum”, which was set in India during the second world war. It tends to be sneered at these days because the main Indian character was played by a white English actor blacked up. It should however be noted that the actor in question, Michael Bates, was chosen because he was born in India and was fluent in Punjab and Urdu which was required for the role.

Don Estelle played the ironically nicknamed Lofty and Windsor Davies was the tough Sergeant.
