Welcome back to my 30 Album Challenge, today is day 25 and the prompt is An Album from the 2000s.
My choice is going into Scandinavian territory to bring you an album from Sweden and my choice is “Strange Place for Snow” by the Esbjorn Svensson Trio.
Released in 2002 on the ACT label this was pretty much my first foray into a contemporary Jazz act outside of vocalists.
The album makes great use of space in the music with minimalist and abstract approaches taken throughout and a few variations along the way. Highlight tracks are “Behind the Yashmack” a slow building piece which builds to a dramatic pace and a sudden ending, the haunting ballad “Bound for the Beauty of the South”, and the amusingly titled “When God Created the Coffee Break”.
