Fandango’s Provocative Question #104

What do you think is the one subject (or thing) that should be taught in school that isn’t?

Well this is a tricky one because a lot of the things that I think needed bringing into the classroom when I was in school have subsequently been bought in, or slowly introduced anyway. Things like LGBT education needed to be introduced to the curriculum a lot earlier then it was, my memories of education along those lines are that it was virtually non-existent. I can recall homosexuality being bought up once and for some reason in RE in which the teacher, whose name I shan’t reveal but was close to the nickname of a well known boxer, blatantly dicated homophobic rhetoric.

Luckily the UK education system has moved on somewhat on that front in someways but there is still a long way to go.

I would actually say food and health education needs to be put in the core of education, as I feel it is sadly lacking in the UK and a lot of this comes down to resources and funding being slashed systematically every year by our so-called educational bodies. Encourage classes from an early age to learn first aid, have a class window box and planning a meal plan and budget and this will go a long way.

    • We had it at my school just at the start of a shift in direction. The subject was rapidly changing to reflect and study the commercial/industrial processes of getting things to the supermarket shelves and business practices, with a clear thought of people going into the catering trade as opposed to looking after the dinner table
